Tilt Column: Reassembly
- To reassemble, reverse disassembly procedure. Using Shift Tube Installer (J-23073), install shift tube assembly into bottom of steering column. Lubricate adapter and bearing assembly with lithium grease before installation. Lubricate gearshift lever bowl wave washer with lithium grease before installation.
- Install joint preload spring onto centering sphere. Lubricate upper steering shaft centering sphere with lithium grease. Insert centering sphere into upper steering shaft and rotate 90 degrees. Tilt lower steering shaft up to 90-degree angle and attach to upper steering shaft aligning marks made during disassembly procedure.NOTE: Ensure upper and lower steering shafts are properly assembled with marks made during disassembly properly aligned. Failure to properly assemble steering shafts will cause steering wheel to be incorrectly positioned by 180 degrees.
- Lubricate steering shaft with lithium grease and install shaft into steering column. Move ignition switch slider to far right position and then back one detent to left. See Figure
. Ignition switch should now be in OFF/LOCK position.NOTE: Install ignition switch with switch in OFF/LOCK position. New ignition switch will be pinned in OFF/LOCK position; plastic pin must be removed after installation of ignition switch to steering column.
- Install ignition switch onto steering column. Install dimmer switch actuator rod. Connect dimmer switch to actuator rod. Place a 3/32" drill bit into hole on dimmer switch. Position dimmer switch onto steering column and push against actuator rod to remove lash. Remove drill bit and tighten dimmer switch retaining screws. Connect ignition switch and dimmer switch electrical connectors.
- Using Lock Shoe/Release Lever Pin Remover/Installer (J-22635), install lock shoe dowel pin and release lever pin. Lubricate bearing assembly with lithium grease, and install assembly into column housing using Steering Column Hanging Bearing Installer (J-38630) and Driver (J-8092).
- Install tilt lever. Position column housing onto column housing support engaging ignition switch actuator rack in housing with pin on end of ignition switch actuator rod in housing support. Pull back on tilt lever and push column housing onto column housing support. Release tilt lever engaging lock shoes onto lock shoe dowel pin. Remove tilt lever.
- Lubricate tilt pivot pins with lithium grease and firmly press pins into column housing until seated. Lubricate tilt spring guide and tilt spring with lithium grease and install into housing. Using screwdriver, push down and turn clockwise to install and lock tilt spring retainer into column housing.
- Install washer/wiper switch. Install washer/wiper switch actuator pivot pin. Lubricate dimmer switch actuator rod with lithium grease and install onto end cap. Install housing cover end cap into column housing cover. Install column housing cover onto steering column housing and tighten screws in counterclockwise sequence beginning with screw in 12 o'clock position. Install tilt lever.
- To complete installation, reverse remaining disassembly procedure. Lubricate turn signal canceling cam with synthetic grease before installation. Using Lock Plate Compressor (J-23653-C), install NEW shaft lock retaining ring. See Figure . Ensure retaining ring is fully seated in groove on steering shaft.
- Carefully pull down on turn signal electrical wiring to remove any possible kinks within steering column. Tighten bolts and screws to specification. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS table at end of article.
