Diagnostic Procedures
- Perform ON-BOARD DIAGNOSTIC (OBD) SYSTEM CHECK. See the BASIC TESTING article. Read and record FREEZE FRAME and/or FAIL RECORDS data for each DTC set. After performing OBD system check, go to next step.
- Ensure engine coolant level is full. Turn ignition off. Disconnect PCM harness connector. Turn ignition on. Using a test light connected to battery voltage, probe HOT light circuit at PCM harness connector. If test light illuminates, go to next step. If test light does not illuminate, go to step 6).
- Turn ignition off. Reconnect PCM harness connector. Check temperature gauge using scan tool. If gauge is indicating excessive temperature, check and repair temperature gauge circuit. If gauge does not indicate excessive temperature, go to next step.
- Turn ignition on, with engine off. Using DVOM, check voltage to HOT light circuit at PCM harness connector. If voltage reading is near battery voltage, go to step 6). If not, go to next step.
- Check HOT light circuit for short to ground. Repair as necessary. After repairs, go to step 8). If circuit is okay, go to step 7).
- Check for open in ignition feed circuit to HOT light indicator. Check for poor terminal connection at PCM. Repair as necessary. After repairs, go to step 9). If no problems were found, go to next step.
- Replace PCM. Program replacement PCM using required equipment. After replacing PCM, go to step 9).
- Locate and repair short to ground at HOT light circuit. After repairs, go to next step.
- Using scan tool, read and record FAIL RECORDS data, and clear DTCs. Operate vehicle within conditions noted in FAIL RECORDS data. Using scan tool, select SPECIFIC DTC INFO for DTC P1672. If scan tool displays DTC P1672 FAILED THIS IGN, return to step 2). If scan tool does not display DTC P1672 FAILED THIS IGN, repair is complete.
