Bleeding Procedures
NOTE:
Frequently check brake fluid level in master cylinder during bleeding sequence. Once fluid flows from both hydraulic modulator bleed valves, hydraulic modulator is sufficiently full of fluid, but may not be completely free of air. Bleed wheel cylinders/calipers to ensure low points in system are free of air, then hydraulic modulator can be purged of any remaining air.
CAUTION:
DO NOT release brake pedal until bleed screw has been tightened.
- Re-home ABS motors. See BLEEDING PRECAUTIONS . Clean master cylinder cap and surrounding area, then remove cap. Fill master cylinder and install cap.
- Prime hydraulic modulator. Attach clear vinyl hose to rear bleed screw on hydraulic modulator. Place other end of hose in clean, transparent container. Partially fill container with clean brake fluid until end of hose is submerged in fluid.
- Open bleed screw 1/2-3/4 turn. Depress brake pedal and hold. Close bleed screw and release brake pedal. Repeat procedure until flow of brake fluid is clear and bubble free. Repeat procedure to bleed hydraulic modulator at front bleed screw. When fluid flows from both hydraulic modulator bleed screws, go to next step.
- Ensure master cylinder is full. Install clear vinyl hose onto first wheel bleed screw to be serviced. See BRAKELINE BLEEDING SEQUENCE table. Place other end of hose in clean, transparent container. Partially fill container with clean brake fluid so end of hose is submerged in fluid. Open bleed screw, and slowly depress brake pedal and hold.
- Close bleed screw, and release pedal. Wait 5 seconds. Repeat procedure including 5-second wait, until flow of brake fluid is clear and bubble free. Proceed to next bleed screw. See BRAKELINE BLEEDING SEQUENCE table. Add brake fluid to master cylinder after bleeding all wheels.
- Bleed hydraulic modulator. Attach clear vinyl hose to rear bleed screw on hydraulic modulator. Place other end of hose in clean, transparent container. Partially fill container with clean brake fluid until end of hose is submerged in fluid.
- Open bleed screw 1/2-3/4 turn. Depress brake pedal and hold. Close bleed screw and release brake pedal. Wait 5 seconds. Repeat procedure, including 5-second wait, until flow of brake fluid is clear and bubble free. Repeat procedure to bleed hydraulic modulator at front bleed screw. Check master cylinder reservoir fluid level.
- Turn ignition on. Depress brake pedal with moderate force and hold in position. Note pedal travel and feel. If pedal travel feels firm and constant, go to next step. If pedal feels soft or has excessive travel either initially or after starting engine, go to step 10.
- Start engine. Recheck pedal travel. If pedal is still firm and constant and travel is not excessive, road test vehicle. Make several normal (non-ABS) stops from moderate speed to ensure proper brake function.
- Using Tech 2, release and then apply motors 3 times and cycle solenoids 10 times. Apply motors to ensure pistons are in the home position. Repeat bleeding procedure.
