Anti-Lock Brake System: Description

CAUTION: See ANTI-LOCK BRAKE SAFETY PRECAUTIONS article in GENERAL INFORMATION.

Metro & Firefly (Canadian) are equipped with ABS-VI anti-lock brake system. ABS-VI system uses electric motors to modulate displacement pistons. Anti-Lock Brake System (ABS) operates on each front wheel and both rear wheels. ABS-VI system consists of Electronic Brake Control Module (EBCM), system enable relay, 4 wheel speed sensors (WSS), hydraulic unit, 3 warning lights and brakelight switch.

EBCM uses signals from WSS to determine when a wheel is about to lock-up, and adjusts hydraulic pressure to maintain optimum braking. ABS-VI cannot increase brake pressure greater than master cylinder pressure generated by driver. ABS-VI cannot apply brakes by itself.

NOTE: For more information on brake system, see appropriate DISC & DRUM article.
