Malfunction Indicator Light (Mil) Check

NOTE: SERVICE ENGINE SOON light, located in instrument cluster, is referred to as the MIL.

NOTE: MIL will flash once every second if PCM detects a misfire condition which could cause damage to catalytic converter.

Turn ignition on. If MIL illuminates, go to next step. If MIL does not illuminate, repair MIL. See MALFUNCTION INDICATOR LIGHT (MIL) INOPERATIVE .
Start engine. If MIL goes out, system is okay. If driveability problems are present, see TESTS W/O CODES article. If MIL remains on, check for codes. See RETRIEVING CODES . If no DTC is stored in PCM memory with MIL illuminated, repair MIL. See MALFUNCTION INDICATOR LIGHT (MIL) REMAINS ON .
