Power Steering Pressure (PSP) Switch Circuit

  1. If powertrain OBD system check been performed, go to next step. If powertrain OBD system check has not been performed, perform powertrain OBD system check. See POWERTRAIN OBD SYSTEM CHECK in TESTS W/CODES article.
  2. Connect scan tool to data link connector. Start engine. Warm engine to normal operating temperature. Turn all accessories off. Observe PSP switch parameter on scan tool. With steering wheel straight ahead, scan tool should display OFF. Turn steering wheel to right or left, scan tool should display ON. If PSP switch does not operate as described, go to next step. If PSP switch operates as described, PSP switch is functioning normally.
  3. Turn ignition switch to LOCK position. Disconnect PSP switch harness connector. Turn ignition switch to RUN position. Measure voltage at PSP switch harness connector terminal. If battery voltage exists, go to next step. If battery voltage does not exist, go to step 5).
  4. Using a test light connected to positive battery voltage, probe PSP switch terminal (switch side). If test light does not illuminate when steering wheel is turned completely to right or left, go to step 6). If test light illuminates when steering wheel is turned completely to right or left, check connections at PCM and PSP switch.
NOTE: PSP switch signal circuit changes from Black wire at PSP switch harness connector to Blue/Orange wire at PCM harness connector.
  5. Check PSP switch signal circuit for open or short to ground, between PCM and PSP switch harness connectors. If open or short to ground does not exist, go to step 8). If open or short to ground exists, repair as necessary and go to step 9).
  6. Check for poor connection at PSP switch. If poor connection does not exist, go to next step. If poor connection exists, repair as necessary and go to step 9).
  7. Replace PSP switch and go to step 9).
  8. Replace PCM and go to next step.
  9. Test drive vehicle under conditions that set the DTC. Check for other DTCs. If DTCs were retrieved, perform appropriate DTC test. If no DTCs were retrieved, system is okay at this time.
