Charging System Test

  1. Turn ignition on. If charge indicator light does not illuminate, go to CHARGE INDICATOR LIGHT INOPERATIVE  . If charge indicator light illuminates, turn ignition to START position. If engine cranks, go to next step. If starter solenoid does not click or starter solenoid clicks, but engine does not crank, diagnose starter. See appropriate STARTERS article.
  2. Start engine. If charging system voltage is 13-16 volts and charge indicator light or voltmeter is operating properly, go to next step. If charge indicator light is always on, go to CHARGE INDICATOR LIGHT ALWAYS ON  . If charge indicator light is inoperative, go to CHARGE INDICATOR LIGHT INOPERATIVE  . If vehicle is equipped with a voltmeter and system voltage is okay, but voltmeter reading is not 13-16 volts, go to VOLTMETER DISPLAYING HIGH OR LOW  .
  3. Turn on headlights, blower motor and defogger. Raise engine speed to 2500 RPM for 2 minutes. If system voltage is 13-16 volts, voltmeter is steady at 13-16 volts or charge indicator light is not on, system is okay. If charging system voltage is not 13-16 volts, generator is not operating properly.
