Anti-Lock Brake System: Description

Prizm is equipped with Lucas-Sumitomo Anti-Lock Brake System (ABS). ABS system uses electric motors to modulate solenoid valves. ABS operates at each wheel independently. ABS system consists of Electronic Brake Control Module/Electronic Brake Pressure Modulator Valve (BPMV/EBCM) assembly, ABS light driver relay, wheel speed sensors at each wheel, hydraulic unit, brakelight switch and 2 warning indicator lights.

BPMV/EBCM uses signals from wheel speed sensors to determine when wheel is about to lock up and adjusts hydraulic pressure to maintain optimum braking. ABS cannot increase brake pressure greater than master cylinder pressure generated by driver. ABS cannot apply brakes by itself.
