Diagnostic Aids

If DTC P0463 is also set, diagnose DTC 0463 first. A stuck fuel level sensor may cause DTC P0461 to set. Check for a poor electrical connection at PCM.

When a fuel level sensor circuit DTC is present, scan tool will display a default value of 100 percent. Before diagnosing fuel level sensor circuit with scan tool, DTC P0461 or P0463 must be cleared. An open in fuel level sensor circuit will indicate zero fuel level (empty fuel tank). A short to ground in fuel level circuit will indicate 100 percent fuel level (full fuel tank).

An intermittent malfunction may be caused by a poor connection, rubbed-through wire insulation, or a wire broken inside insulation. Inspect harness connectors for backed-out terminals, improper mating, broken locks, improperly formed or damaged terminals, or poor terminal-to-wire connections before component replacement.
