Engine Electrical Diagnostic System Check

  1. Perform battery test and inspection. See BATTERY TESTING & INSPECTION  under ON-VEHICLE TESTING. If battery passed test, go to next step. If battery did not pass test, replace battery.
  2. Connect scan tool to Data Link Connector (DLC). Turn ignition switch to RUN position. If scan tool powers up, go to next step. If scan tool does not power up, see BODY CONTROL MODULES - IMPALA & MONTE CARLO article in ACCESSORIES & EQUIPMENT.
  3. Using scan tool, attempt to communicate with Body Control Module (BCM), Instrument Panel Cluster (IPC) and Powertrain Control Module (PCM). If scan tool communicates with modules, go to next step. If scan tool does not communicate with modules, see BODY CONTROL MODULES - IMPALA & MONTE CARLO article in ACCESSORIES & EQUIPMENT.
  4. Using scan tool, select DISPLAY DTCs function and retrieve any BCM, IPC or PCM DTCs. Record all DTCs displayed, DTC status and module which set DTC. If scan tool displayed DTCs, go to next step. If scan tool did not display DTCs, repair starting system by symptom. See SYMPTOM INDEX  table under SYSTEM TESTS.
  5. If scan tool does not display DTCs which begin with "U", go to next step. If scan tool displays DTCs which begin with "U", see DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODE DEFINITIONS in BODY CONTROL MODULES - IMPALA & MONTE CARLO article in ACCESSORIES & EQUIPMENT.
  6. If scan tool does not display DTCs which begin with "P", go to next step. If scan tool displays DTCs which begin with "P", see appropriate SELF-DIAGNOSTICS article in ENGINE PERFORMANCE.
  7. If scan tool does not display DTC B1000, go to next step. If scan tool displays DTC B1000, perform appropriate test. See DTC B1000 under DIAGNOSTIC TESTS in BODY CONTROL MODULES - IMPALA & MONTE CARLO article in ACCESSORIES & EQUIPMENT.
  8. If scan tool does not display DTCs B2947, B2948, B2957, B2958, B2960, B3031 or B3032, go to next step. If scan tool displays DTCs B2947, B2948, B2957, B2958, B2960, B3031 or B3032, perform appropriate test. See DIAGNOSTIC TESTS in BODY CONTROL MODULES - IMPALA & MONTE CARLO article in ACCESSORIES & EQUIPMENT.
  9. If scan tool does not display DTCs B1507 or B1508, repair starting system by symptom. See SYMPTOM INDEX  table under SYSTEM TESTS. If scan tool displays DTCs B1507 or B1508, perform appropriate test. See DIAGNOSTIC TESTS in GENERATORS & REGULATORS - IMPALA & MONTE CARLO article.
