Commutator Test

  1. Using an ohmmeter, measure resistance between commutator segments. If resistance is greater than 5 ohms at any point, an open exists, replace armature.
  2. Clean commutator segment surfaces with No. 400 grit sandpaper (if necessary). If surface is scored, out-of-round, or pitted, replace commutator.
  3. Using "V" blocks and a dial indicator, ensure commutator runout does not exceed specification. See STARTER SPECIFICATIONS . Replace armature as necessary.
  4. Measure undercut depth for insulating mica. Ensure standard undercut depth for insulating mica is within specification. Minimum mica undercut depth is .008" (.20 mm). If depth is not within specification, replace armature.
