Shift Interlock Cable: Removal

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable. Remove the 6 screws from the console. See Fig 1 . Remove the center console from the vehicle. Remove the rear console from the vehicle.
  2. Remove the 2 screws and the gearshift lever knob (1) from the gearshift lever. Unsnap the indicator cover from the gearshift control. See Fig 2 . Remove the shift interlock cable end from the key release plate on the gearshift control.
  3. Remove the illumination lamp bulb socket from the shift indicator cover. See Fig 3 . Remove the shift interlock cable bolt (4). Remove the shift interlock cable (3) from the housing bracket of the gearshift control (2). See Fig 4 .
  4. Remove the front carpet retainers, and pull back the front carpet. Remove the 5 screws, the upper steering column cover, and the lower steering column cover. Remove the lower steering column. See appropriate STEERING COLUMNS article in STEERING.
  5. Remove the screw and the clamp that retains the shift interlock cable (2) from the ignition switch. Push the release shaft (1) in at the ignition switch lock mechanism. See Fig 5 . Remove the cable end from the ignition switch, and the shift interlock cable assembly from the vehicle.
