Commutator Test

  1. Disassemble starter. Using "V" blocks and dial indicator, check commutator runout (out-of-round). Replace armature if runout is not within specifications. See STARTER SPECIFICATIONS  .
  2. Check commutator diameter. If commutator is less than specification, replace armature. See STARTER SPECIFICATIONS  .
  3. Using an ohmmeter, measure resistance between commutator segments. If resistance is greater than 5 ohms at any test point, an open circuit exists in commutator. Replace armature.
  4. Clean commutator segment surfaces with No. 400 grit sandpaper (if necessary). If surface is scored, out-of-round, or pitted, replace armature.
  5. Measure depth between commutator segments. If depth is not within specification, replace armature. See STARTER SPECIFICATIONS  .
