Diagnostic Procedures

  1. Perform powertrain diagnostic system check. See POWERTRAIN DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM CHECK  under SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM. After performing diagnostic system check, go to next step.
  2. CAUTION: Road test vehicle under safe conditions and while obeying all traffic laws. Do not attempt any maneuvers that could jeopardize vehicle control. Failure to adhere to these precautions could lead to serious personal injury and vehicle damage.
  3. In order for this test to run, vehicle must operate in the following conditions:
    • Accelerate vehicle to 30-50 MPH and cruise for 3 minutes after engine reaches operating temperature.
    • Decelerate and stop vehicle (zero MPH).
    • Operate engine at idle for 2 minutes. Ensure service brake is depressed and transmission is in Drive (A/T) or in Neutral with clutch pedal depressed (M/T).
    • Operate vehicle at part throttle to 30-50 MPH and maintain this speed for 30 seconds.

    Using scan tool, review I/M System Status display. If display updates to YES, go to step  5. If display does not update to YES, go to next step.

  4. Using scan tool, observe DTC Information. If scan tool indicates any failed DTCs, diagnose affected DTCs. See DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODE DEFINITIONS . If scan tool does not indicate any failed DTCs, go to next step.
  5. NOTE: Refer to INSPECTION/MAINTENANCE COMPLETE SYSTEM SET PROCEDURE  to determine which DTCs are required to run in order to complete this test.
  6. Operate vehicle within the conditions for running DTC. See CONDITIONS FOR RUNNING DTC . Repeat this procedure until scan tool indicates that diagnostic test has run. Using scan tool, observe I/M System Status display. If display updates to YES, go to next step. If display does not update to YES, go to DIAGNOSTIC AIDS .
  7. Using scan tool, observe the emission related DTC portion of the I/M System Status display. If scan tool indicates any emission related DTCs are set, diagnose affected DTCs. See DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODE DEFINITIONS . If scan tool does not indicate any emission related DTCs are set, system is okay.
