Powertrain Diagnostic System Check

NOTE: Check for applicable Technical Service Bulletins (TSBs) before proceeding. DO NOT perform the following procedure if driveability conditions are not present. DO NOT turn ignition off during the following procedure or clear DTCs unless instructed to do so.
  1. If vehicle does not crank, see appropriate STARTERS article in STARTING & CHARGING SYSTEMS. Ensure battery is fully charged and cables are clean and tight. Ensure PCM grounds are clean, tight, and in proper location. Repair as necessary. After repairs, go to next step.
  2. Turn ignition on, with engine off. Using scan tool, attempt to establish communication with PCM. If scan tool communicates with PCM, go to next step. If scan tool does not communicate with PCM, perform SCAN TOOL DOES NOT COMMUNICATE WITH CLASS 2 DEVICE in appropriate BODY CONTROL MODULES article.
  3. Attempt to start engine. If engine starts and idles, go to next step. If engine does not start, go to appropriate NO-START DIAGNOSIS in appropriate BASIC DIAGNOSTIC PROCEDURES article.
  4. Using scan tool, select DTC INFO. If scan tool displays any powertrain DTCs, go to next step. If scan tool does not display any powertrain DTCs, go to step  7 .
  5. Using scan tool, save or capture powertrain DTC Information, Store Information. After saving DTC information, go to next step.
  6. If scan tool displays DTC P0601, go to DTC P0601: PCM MEMORY (2.0L)  or DTC P0601-P0607, P1600, P1621, P1627 OR P1683: PCM MEMORY (2.5L)  . If other than DTC P0601 is set, see DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODE DEFINITIONS  .
  7. If problem is related to automatic transmission, diagnose transmission. See appropriate ELECTRONIC CONTROLS article in AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSIONS. If problem is not related to automatic transmission, go to next step.
  8. If problem is related with I/M testing, go to INSPECTION/MAINTENANCE PROCEDURES  . Repair as necessary. If problem is other than I/M testing, go to next step.
  9. Check for cause of hard start, surges/chuggles, lack of power, sluggishness, or sponginess. Check for cause of detonation/spark knock, hesitation, sag, stumble, cuts out/misses, poor fuel economy, poor fuel fill quality, rough, unstable, or incorrect idle and stalling. Check for cause of dieseling/run-on, backfire, MIL inoperative, or MIL is always on. Repair as necessary. If no problem is found, problem is intermittent.
