Test C: Charge Indicator Inoperative

  1. If charging system check was performed, go to next step. If charging system check was not performed, go to TEST A: CHARGING SYSTEM TEST  .
  2. Turn ignition switch to RUN position. If battery charge indicator does not illuminate during 5 second bulb check, go to next step. If battery charge indicator illuminates during 5 second bulb check, problem may be intermittent. Check wiring and connections, see PRELIMINARY INSPECTION  under TROUBLE SHOOTING.
  3. Disconnect generator 3-pin harness connector. Connect a 20-amp fused jumper to charge indicator ground circuit, generator harness connector terminal "L" (Yellow wire). Turn ignition switch to RUN position. If charge indicator illuminates, go to next step. If charge indicator does not illuminate, go to step  6 .
  4. Test generator supply voltage circuit, generator harness connector terminal "S" (White wire), for an open. See WIRING DIAGRAMS  . If no problem exists, go to next step. If problem exists, repair circuit as necessary and go to step  9 .
  5. Replace integrated circuit voltage regulator. See OVERHAUL  . After repairs are made, go to step  9 .
  6. Inspect charge indicator bulb. Replace as necessary. Test charge indicator supply voltage circuit, generator harness connector terminal "I" (Red/Blue wire), for an open. See WIRING DIAGRAMS  . If no problem exists, go to next step. If problem exists, repair circuit as necessary and go to step  9 .
  7. Test charge indicator ground circuit, generator harness connector terminal "L" (Yellow wire), for an open. See WIRING DIAGRAMS  . If no problem exists, go to next step. If problem exists, repair circuit as necessary and go to step  9 .
  8. Repair or replace instrument cluster printed circuit. See appropriate INSTRUMENT PANELS article in ACCESSORIES & EQUIPMENT. After repairs are made, go to next step.
  9. Operate system to verify repair. If condition is corrected, system is okay. If condition was not found and corrected, go to step  2 .
