Ignition System Diagnosis

  1. Perform diagnostic system check. See DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM CHECK - ENGINE CONTROLS in SELF-DIAGNOSTICS - PRIZM article. After performing diagnostic system check, go to next step.
  2. Using scan tool connected to Data Link Connector (DLC), check for Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTC). If DTCs P0335, P0340, P1300, P1305, P1310 or P1315 are not set, go to next step. If DTCs P0335, P0340, P1300, P1305, P1310 or P1315 are set, go to DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODE DEFINITIONS in SELF-DIAGNOSTICS - PRIZM article.
  3. Turn ignition off. Disconnect all 4 fuel injector electrical connectors. Disconnect electrical connector at one ignition coil assembly, and remove ignition coil. Connect Spark Tester (J-26792) to spark plug boot of removed ignition coil. DO NOT remove spark plugs. Clip spark tester to good ground source. Reconnect ignition coil electrical connector. Check for a strong Blue spark while cranking engine. Repeat procedure for all ignition coils. If any ignition coil did not have a strong Blue spark while cranking engine, go to next step. If all ignition coils have a strong Blue spark while cranking engine, go to step  6 .
  4. If a strong Blue spark is present at one or more ignition coils while cranking engine, go to next step. If a strong Blue spark is not present at one or more ignition coils while cranking engine, go to step  8 .
  5. Turn ignition off. Replace faulty ignition coil(s). Repeat step  3 . If a strong Blue spark is now present while cranking engine, go to step  7 . If a strong Blue spark is not present now while cranking engine, go to step  8 .
  6. Inspect ignition coil assembly boot and terminals for cracks, corrosion and carbon tracking. If any ignition coil has cracks, corrosion or carbon tracking, go to next step. If ignition coils are okay, go to step  9 .
  7. Replace defective ignition coil(s). After repair, go to step  9 .
  8. Replace PCM. After repair, reprogram PCM and go to next step. See PROGRAMMING in SELF-DIAGNOSTICS - PRIZM article.
  9. Assemble ignition system. Reconnect electrical connectors at all 4 fuel injectors. Attempt to start engine. If engine starts and continues to run, go to next step. If engine does not start and continue to run, go to ENGINE CRANKS BUT DOES NOT RUN  .
  10. Using scan tool, check for DTCs. If no DTCs are set, system is okay. If DTCs are set, go to DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODE DEFINITIONS in SELF-DIAGNOSTICS - PRIZM article.
