Checking and Adding Power Steering Fluid
- Ensure the vehicle is on a level surface.
- Inspect the power steering fluid level in the reservoir (4).NOTE: When adding fluid or making a complete fluid change, always use the proper power steering fluid. Failure to use the proper fluid will cause hose and seal damage and fluid leaks.
- If the fluid level is below the COLD MIN mark (2), add DEXRON®-III Automatic Transmission fluid, GM P/N 12346143, or equivalent, to the reservoir.NOTE: Do not hold the steering wheel in the full turn position longer than 5 seconds, as damage to the steering pump may result.
- With the engine idling at 1,000 RPM or less, turn the steering wheel from stop to stop several times in order to boost fluid temperature to 80°C (176°F).
- Inspect the fluid level in the reservoir.
- If the fluid level is below the MIN HOT mark (1), add DEXRON®-III Automatic Transmission fluid, GM P/N 12346143, or equivalent, to the reservoir.
- If the fluid level is above the MAX HOT mark (1), use a siphon in order to remove fluid from the reservoir.
- Inspect the power steering fluid for foaming or a milky appearance. Foaming and a milky appearance indicate either the existence of air in the system or the fluid level is too low. If foaming or a milky appearance exists, bleed the power steering system. Refer to Bleeding the Power Steering System .
