Diagnostic Procedures

  1. Did you perform the Diagnostic System Check - Engine Controls? If yes, go to next step. If no, perform diagnostic system check - engine controls. See DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM CHECK - ENGINE CONTROLS  under SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM.
  2. Connect a scan tool. Turn ON the ignition, with engine OFF. Does scan tool display any engine data? If yes, go to next step. If no, go to SCAN TOOL DOES NOT COMMUNICATE WITH VCM/PCM in appropriate BODY CONTROLS article in ACCESSORIES & EQUIPMENT.
  3. Observe the Instrument Panel Cluster (IPC) assembly operation. Do all other functions of the IPC function normally? If yes, go to next step. If no, diagnose instrument panel gauges. See appropriate INSTRUMENT PANELS article in ACCESSORIES & EQUIPMENT.
  4. Turn OFF ignition. Disconnect PCM electrical connector with MIL control circuit. Turn ON ignition, with engine OFF. Probe MIL control circuit on harness side with a 3-amp fuse jumper wire to ground. Does the MIL illuminate? If yes, go to step  9 . If no, go to next step.
  5. Did the fuse in the jumper wire open? If yes, go to next step. If no, go to step  7 .
  6. Repair short to voltage in MIL control circuit. After repairs, go to step  10 .
  7. Turn ON ignition, with engine OFF. Backprobe electrical connector C1 terminal No. 2 of IPC assembly with a 3-amp fuse jumper wire to ground. Does the MIL illuminate? If yes, go to next step. If no, diagnose instrument panel gauges. See appropriate INSTRUMENT PANELS article in ACCESSORIES & EQUIPMENT.
  8. Repair open in MIL control circuit. After repairs, go to step  10 .
  9. Replace PCM. Perform PCM relearn procedure. See POWERTRAIN CONTROL MODULE  under PROGRAMMING. After replacing PCM, go to next step.
  10. Turn ON ignition, with engine OFF. Is MIL illuminated? If yes, go to next step. If no, go to step  2 .
  11. Use scan tool to clear DTCs. Turn OFF ignition for 30 seconds. Start engine. Observe MIL operation. Is MIL illuminated while engine is running? If yes, perform diagnostic system check - engine controls. See DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM CHECK - ENGINE CONTROLS  under SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM. If no, system is okay.
