Engine Controls - System & Component Testing - 3.4L: Introduction

CAUTION: When battery is disconnected, vehicle computer may lose memory data. Driveability problems may exist until computer systems have completed a relearn cycle. Go to appropriate COMPUTER RELEARN PROCEDURES article in GENERAL INFORMATION before disconnecting the battery.

Before testing separate components or systems, perform all procedures listed in BASIC DIAGNOSTIC PROCEDURES - 3.4L ALERO, GRAND AM, IMPALA & MONTE CARLO article. Since many computer-controlled and monitored components will set a DTC if they malfunction, it is also recommended self-diagnostics be performed. See DIAGNOSTIC STARTING POINT- ENGINE CONTROLS under SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM in SELF-DIAGNOSTICS - 3.4L ALERO, GRAND AM, IMPALA & MONTE CARLO article.

NOTE: Testing individual components does not isolate shorts or opens. Perform all voltage tests using a DVOM with a minimum 10-megohm input impedance, unless stated otherwise in test procedure. Use ohmmeter to isolate wiring harness shorts or opens.
