Starter Motor Replacement: Installation

  1. If necessary, install the starter shield. See Figure . Install starter to vehicle through right wheel well opening.
  2. Install the starter solenoid lead to the solenoid stud. See Figure .
    NOTE: Use the correct fastener in the correct location. Replacement fasteners must be the correct part number for that application. Fasteners requiring replacement or fasteners requiring the use of thread locking compound or sealant are identified in the service procedure. DO NOT use paints, lubricants, or corrosion inhibitors on fasteners or fastener joint surfaces unless specified. These coatings affect fastener torque and joint clamping force and may damage the fastener. Use the correct tightening sequence and specifications when installing fasteners in order to avoid damage to parts and systems.
  3. Install the starter solenoid nut. Tighten the starter solenoid nut to specification. See FASTENER TIGHTENING SPECIFICATIONS  .
  4. Install the starter power lead and nut. Tighten the starter lead nut to specification. See FASTENER TIGHTENING SPECIFICATIONS  .
  5. Slide the starter rearward. Install the starter bolts. See Figure . Tighten the starter bolts to specification. See FASTENER TIGHTENING SPECIFICATIONS  .
  6. Install the right transmission cover bolt. See Figure . Tighten the transmission cover bolt to specification. See FASTENER TIGHTENING SPECIFICATIONS  .
  7. Connect the negative battery cable.
    1. Verify that all electrical components are off such as interior lights, the underhood lamp, etc.
    2. Clean any corrosion from the negative battery cable using a wire brush.
    3. Connect the negative battery cable. Tighten the cable bolt to specification. See FASTENER TIGHTENING SPECIFICATIONS  .
    4. Install the rear battery cover and nuts. Tighten nuts to specification. See FASTENER TIGHTENING SPECIFICATIONS  .
    5. Lower the vehicle. Reset the radio presets and theft codes.
