Diagnostic Procedures
- Perform diagnostic system check. See DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM CHECK - ENGINE CONTROLS under SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM in SELF-DIAGNOSTICS - 2.0L TRACKER or DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM CHECK - ENGINE CONTROLS under SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM in SELF-DIAGNOSTICS - 2.5L TRACKER article. After performing diagnostic system check, go to next step.
- Check for DTCs. If DTC P0340 is set, perform diagnostic procedure for DTC P0340. See DTC P0340: CAMSHAFT POSITION SENSOR CIRCUIT under DIAGNOSTIC TESTS in SELF-DIAGNOSTICS - 2.0L TRACKER article or DTC P0340: CAMSHAFT POSITION SENSOR CIRCUIT under DIAGNOSTIC TESTS in SELF-DIAGNOSTICS - 2.5L TRACKER article. If DTC P0340 is not set, go to next step.
- Disconnect fuel injector electrical connectors. Remove ignition coil No. 1. Install Spark Tester (J-26792) to each ignition coil spark plug boot, one wire at a time. Observe spark tester while cranking engine. If good spark exists at each plug boot, go to step 5. If good spark does not exist at any plug boot, go to next step.
- Turn ignition off. Replace faulty ignition coil with known-good ignition coil. Install Spark Tester (J-26792) to each ignition coil spark plug boot, one wire at a time. Observe spark tester while cranking engine. If good spark exists at each plug boot, go to step 6. If good spark does not exist at each plug boot, go to step 7.
- Check ignition coils and spark plug boots for cracks, corrosion on terminals, carbon tracking and water intrusion. Repair as necessary and go to next step. If coils and spark plug boots are okay, go to step 13.
- Replace faulty ignition coil assembly or assemblies. After repairs, go to step 13.
- Disconnect electrical connector from ignition coils supplying cylinders with no spark. Turn ignition on with engine off. Connect a test light from ground to ignition positive voltage circuit on harness side of ignition coil. If test light illuminates, go to next step. If test light does not illuminate, go to step 10.
- Connect a test light from battery positive to ground circuit on harness side of ignition coil. If test light illuminates, go to step 11. If test light does not illuminate, go to next step.
- Repair open or faulty connection in ignition coil ground circuit. After repairs, go to step 13.
- Repair open in ignition positive voltage circuit of ignition coil. After repairs, go to step 13.
- Check for an open or a short in ignition coil control circuit. Repair as necessary. After repairs, go to step 13. If ignition coil control circuit is okay, go to next step.
- Replace PCM. Perform PCM programming. See POWERTRAIN CONTROL MODULE under PROGRAMMING in SELF-DIAGNOSTICS - 2.5L TRACKER article. After repairs, go to step 13.
- Assemble ignition system. Attempt to start engine. If engine starts and runs, go to next step. If engine does not start and run, go to NO-START DIAGNOSIS .
- Check for DTCs. If any DTC are set, perform appropriate diagnostic procedures. See DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODE DEFINITIONS in SELF-DIAGNOSTICS - 2.0L TRACKER article or DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODE DEFINITIONS in SELF-DIAGNOSTICS - 2.5L TRACKER. If no DTCs are set, system is okay.
