Diagnostic Procedures

  1. Perform diagnostic system check - engine controls. See DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM CHECK - ENGINE CONTROLS  under SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM. After performing diagnostic system check - engine controls, go to next step.
  2. Retrieve DTCs. If DTC P0117 or P0118 is set, diagnose affected DTCs first. See DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODE DEFINITIONS . If DTC P0117 or P0118 is not set, go to next step.
  3. Measure the actual Engine Coolant Temperature (ECT). Turn ignition on, with engine off. Observe the ECT sensor parameter on the scan tool. Is the ECT sensor value about the actual coolant temperature? If yes, go to step  11. If no, go to next step.
  4. Disconnect ECT sensor harness connector. Observe ECT sensor parameter on scan tool. If ECT sensor parameter is -40°F (-40°C), go to next step. If ECT sensor parameter is not -40°F (-40°C), go to step  8.
  5. Jumper the ECT sensor input circuit and the ground circuit together at the ECT sensor harness connector. Observe the ECT sensor parameter on the scan tool. Does the ECT equal 327°F (164°C)? If yes, go to step  13. If no, go to next step.
  6. Jumper the ECT sensor input circuit to chassis ground. Observe the ECT sensor parameter on the scan tool. Does the ECT equal 327°F (164°C)? If yes, go to next step. If no, go to step  8.
  7. Check for open or high electrical resistance in the ECT sensor ground circuit. Is repair complete? If yes, go to step  14. If no, go to step  9.
  8. Turn ignition off. Disconnect the PCM electrical connector C2. Check the ECT sensor input circuit for a short or a high electrical resistance. Repair as necessary. Was a repair necessary? If yes, go to step  14. If no, go to next step.
  9. Check for a faulty connection at the PCM and the ECT electrical connectors. Repair as necessary. Was a repair necessary? If yes, go to step  14. If no, go to next step.
  10. Replace PCM. Perform PCM relearn procedure. See POWERTRAIN CONTROL MODULE  under PROGRAMMING. After replacing PCM, go to step  15.
  11. Inspect the engine cooling system for a faulty thermostat, low coolant level, incorrect coolant or faulty cooling system operation. Repair as necessary. Was a repair necessary? If yes, go to step  14. If no, go to next step.
  12. Perform the scan tool Clear DTC Information function. Operate the vehicle within the Freeze Frame conditions as specified. Does DTC P0116 set? If yes, go to next step. If no, see DIAGNOSTIC AIDS .
  13. Replace ECT sensor. After replacing sensor, go to next step.
  14. Turn ignition off. Remove DOME fuse (located in passenger compartment fuse block). Reinstall DOME fuse. Reset radio clock time. Start engine. Operate the vehicle within the Conditions for Running the DTC or until the DTC P0116 diagnostic test has run. See CONDITIONS FOR RUNNING DTC . Does the DTC run and pass? If yes, go to next step. If no, go to step  2.
  15. With a scan tool, observe the stored information, Capture Info. Does the scan tool display any DTCs that you have not diagnosed? If yes, see DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODE DEFINITIONS . If no, system is okay.
