Fuel Tank Draining Procedure

CAUTION: Do not drain the fuel into an open container. Never store the fuel in an open container due to the possibility of a fire or an explosion.
NOTE: Do not drain fuel through the fuel tank filler pipe in order to prevent damage to the fuel tank filler pipe check-ball.
  1. Relieve the fuel system fuel pressure. Refer to Fuel Pressure Relief Procedure .
  2. Remove the fuel sender assembly. Refer to Fuel Sender Assembly Replacement .
  3. Use a hand operated fuel pump device in order to drain the fuel through the fuel sender access panel.
  4. Install the fuel sender assembly. Refer to Fuel Sender Assembly Replacement .
  5. Remove the fuel fill cap.
  6. Add fuel and install the fuel fill cap.
  7. Connect the negative battery cable. Refer toBattery Negative Cable Disconnect/Connect Procedure in Engine Electrical.
  8. Inspect for leaks.
    1. Turn ON the ignition for 2 seconds.
    2. Turn OFF the ignition for 10 seconds.
    3. Turn ON the ignition.
    4. Inspect for fuel leaks.
  9. Install fuel injector sight shield. Refer toFuel Injector Sight Shield Replacement in Engine Mechanical-3.8L.
