Fuel Tank Draining Procedure

  1. Relieve the fuel system fuel pressure. Refer to Fuel Pressure Relief Procedure .
  2. Loosen the fuel tank filler pipe cap.
  3. Remove the fuel sender assembly. Refer to Fuel Sender Assembly Replacement 
  4. CAUTION: Do not drain the fuel into an open container. Never store the fuel in an open container due to the possibility of a fire or an explosion.
    NOTE: Do not drain fuel through the fuel tank filler pipe in order to prevent damage to the fuel tank filler pipe check-ball.
  5. Use a hand operated fuel pump device in order to drain the fuel through the fuel sender access panel.
  6. Install the fuel sender assembly. Refer to Fuel Sender Assembly Replacement .
  7. Add fuel and tighten the fuel tank filler pipe cap.
  8. Connect the negative battery cable. Refer to Battery Negative Cable Disconnect/Connect Procedure in Engine Electrical.
  9. Inspect the fuel system for leaks by performing the following steps:
    1. Turn ON the ignition for 2 seconds.
    2. Turn OFF the ignition for 10 seconds.
    3. Turn ON the ignition.
    4. Inspect for fuel leaks.
