Fuel Tank Draining Procedure
Tools Required
- J 42960-1 Fuel Tank Drain Hose. See Special Tools and Equipment .
- J 42960-2 Fuel Flapper Door Holder. See Special Tools and Equipment .
CAUTION:
Gasoline or gasoline vapors are highly flammable. A fire could occur if an ignition source is present. Never drain or store gasoline or diesel fuel in an open container, due to the possibility of fire or explosion. Have a dry chemical (Class B) fire extinguisher nearby.
CAUTION:
Always wear safety goggles when working with fuel in order to protect the eyes from fuel splash.
CAUTION:
Fuel Vapors can collect while servicing fuel system parts in enclosed areas such as a trunk. To reduce the risk of fire and increased exposure to vapors:
- Use forced air ventilation such as a fan set outside of the trunk.
- Plug or cap any fuel system openings in order to reduce fuel vapor formation.
- Clean up any spilled fuel immediately.
- Avoid sparks and any source of ignition.
- Use signs to alert others in the work area that fuel system work is in process.
NOTE:
Do not force a hose or the siphon of a hand operated pump into the fuel tank. Forcing the hose or siphon into the fuel tank can damage the check valve located in the fuel filler pipe.
- Remove the fuel filler cap.
- Insert the J 42960-2 into the fuel filler pipe. See Special Tools and Equipment .
- Connect the J 42960-1 to the siphon hose of a hand operated pump device. See Special Tools and Equipment .
- Insert the J 42960-1 into the J 42960-2 . See Special Tools and Equipment .
- Gently feed the J 42960-1 into the fuel filler supply pipe and hose that lead into the neck (1) of the fuel tank. Continue to feed the J 42960-1 down thru the neck (1) of the fuel tank, until reaching the fuel inlet check valve (2). See Special Tools and Equipment . The check valve (2) is located near the bottom of the fuel tank fill pipe and can be reached with approximately 76 cm (30 in) of hose.
- Use the hand operated pump device in order to drain any fuel above the level of the check valve (2).
- Remove the J 42960-1 and siphon hose from the fuel filler pipe. See Special Tools and Equipment .
- Raise and suitably support the vehicle. Refer to Lifting and Jacking the Vehicle in General Information.
- Disconnect the fuel filler supply hose from the neck of the fuel tank.
- Insert the J 42960-1
into the neck of the fuel tank (1). See Special Tools and Equipment .
Continue to feed the J 42960-1 and siphon hose down into the fuel tank fill pipe and past the check valve (2), until reaching the bottom of the fuel tank (3). . Reaching the bottom of the fuel tank will require approximately 46 cm (18 in) of hose. See Special Tools and Equipment
- Drain any fuel in the fuel tank with the hand operated pump device.
- Remove the J 42960-1 and siphon hose from the fuel tank. See Special Tools and Equipment . Pull gently and slowly in order to avoid pinching the hose as it passes through the check (2) opening.
CAUTION:
Refer to Vehicle Lifting Caution in Cautions and Notices.
IMPORTANT:
When removing the fuel tank drain hose from the fuel tank, the hose may become trapped at the check valve. In order to relieve the tension of the check valve, push the drain hose a short distance back into the fuel tank before continuing with removal.
