For equivalent regional tools, refer to Special Tools .
Measure the fluid pressure in order to determine whether the trouble is in the pump or the gear unit.
Test Procedure
- Inspect the power steering fluid level and condition. Refer to Power Steering System Bleeding .
- Apply the park brake.
- Place a drain pan under the vehicle in order to catch any power steering fluid.
- Disconnect the power steering pressure hose at the pump.
- Connect the power steering analyzer to the power steering pressure hose at the pump.
- Place the gear selector lever in PARK if the vehicle is equipped with the automatic transaxle or NEUTRAL if the vehicle is equipped with the manual transaxle.
- Open the gauge valve fully.
- Start the engine and let the engine idle.
- Turn the steering wheel from lock to lock several times in order to warm the fluid to operating temperature.
- Increase the engine speed to 1, 500 RPM.
- Close the gauge valve fully, and read the pressure. Refer to Power Steering Pump Specifications .
- Immediately open the gauge valve fully.
- Turn the steering wheel all the way to the left and the right. If the pressure is within the specified limits, the problem is not in the pump.
CAUTION:
Do not leave the valve fully closed for more than 5 seconds, or the pump could be damaged internally.
