Fuel Pump
Fuel pump is located in fuel tank and is an integral part of sending unit. Fuel is drawn through filter sock on one end of fuel pump and is forced out opposite end. On Shelby turbo models, second fuel pump is located outside fuel tank. Fuel not used by engine is returned to tank through fuel return line.
There are 2 check valves inside fuel pump. One valve relieves internal fuel pump pressure and regulates maximum fuel pressure output. Second check valve is located near pump outlet and restricts fuel flow in either direction when pump is not running.
Voltage supply for fuel pump is supplied through ASD relay, which is located in power module. When logic module receives distributor signal during engine cranking, it signals power module to activate ASD relay. ASD relay then provides power to fuel pump, ignition coil, injectors and some sections of power module.
If distributor signal is not received by logic module, ASD relay does not get power. Power supply to fuel pump and ignition coil is interrupted. This feature prevents fuel flow should vehicle be involved in an accident or if engine stalls.
