Fixed Column With Column Shift Overhaul: Disassembly

  1. Remove steering wheel. See AIR BAG RESTRAINT SYSTEM article under ACCESSORIES/SAFETY EQUIP section. Remove steering column. See FIXED COLUMN WITH COLUMN SHIFT R & I  in this article. Pry out wiring trough retainers and lift off wiring trough. New retainers may be required for reassembly.
  2. To remove shift lever, use masking tape to protect housing. Use a socket to brace housing, then drive retaining roll pin out with a punch. Remove shift lever and spring. Remove breakaway capsules and secure steering column in vise by clamping on mount bracket. DO NOT  distort column bracket.
  3. Remove screws securing turn signal lever cover to lock housing. Remove turn signal lever cover. Remove wiper/washer switch. Pull hider up control stalk and remove screws that attach control stalk sleeve to wiper/washer switch.
  4. Rotate control stalk clockwise one full turn and pull stalk straight out from switch. See Fig 1. Remove turn signal and flasher switch assembly. See Fig 2. Remove ignition key light assembly out the way. See Fig 3. Remove screws that connect bearing housing to lock housing. Remove steering shaft snap ring. See Fig 4. Remove bearing housing.

    CAUTION: DO NOT  allow steering shaft to slide out of jacket.
  5. Remove lock plate spring and lock plate from steering shaft. See Fig 5. Remove shaft through lower end of column.

  6. Remove screw and lift out buzzer/chime switch. See Fig 6. Remove screws attaching ignition switch to column jacket. Remove ignition switch by rotating 90 degrees on rod and sliding off rod.

  7. Remove mounting screws from dimmer switch and disengage switch from actuator rod. Remove screws from bellcrank and slide bellcrank up until it can be disconnected from ignition switch actuator rod. Insert ignition key and turn ignition lock to lock position. Remove ignition key.
  8. Insert 2 small diameter screwdrivers or similar tools into both lock cylinder release holes. See Fig 7. Push in to release spring loaded lock retainers. Lock cylinder lower release hole is just above buzzer/chime switch mounting screw hole.

  9. At the same time, pull lock cylinder out of housing bore. Grasp lock lever and spring assembly and pull straight out of housing. See Fig 7. Remove the lock housing-to-column jacket hex-head retaining screws and remove the lock housing plate and housing from jacket. See Fig 8.

  10. To remove shift tube, loosen shift tube set screw in shift housing. See Fig 9. Remove shift tube through lower end of jacket. Clean and inspect all parts for wear and damage. Inspect turn signal switch for distortion, broken or damaged parts.

  11. Inspect wiring insulation for worn or bare spots. Inspect steering shaft bearings for smooth operation and lubricate with multi-purpose grease. If bearing shows any signs of roughness or wear, it should be replaced. Inspect floor plate grommet and replace if damaged.
