Grounded Field Brushes Test

  1. Locate set of brush holders that are 180 degrees apart and grounded to frame. Connect lead of a self-powered test light to one field brush and touch test light probe against same field brush holder (ground).
  2. Test light should illuminate if continuity exists. Repeat test on other brush 180 degrees opposite. Test light should illuminate if continuity exists. If continuity does not exist, replace complete brush holder plate assembly or complete starter.
  3. Repeat procedure on remaining 2 brushes and holders. On these insulated brush holders, test light should NOT illuminate. If test light does illuminate on insulated brush holders, brush holders and plate are grounded. Replace complete brush holder plate assembly or complete starter.
