Repair and Diagnosis: Electrical: Starter: Description
A Bosch permanent magnet gear reduction starter is used on 2.2L and 2.5L 4-cylinder and some 3.0L V6 engines. See Figure. A planetary gear train transmits power from starter motor to pinion shaft. Six permanent magnets are used, eliminating potential field wire-to-frame shorts. A Nippondenso field coil gear reduction starter is used on models with 3.3L and 3.8L V6 engines and some models with 3.0L V6 engines. See Figure.
All models use a Bosch starter relay in starter circuit between battery and starter solenoid terminal. Automatic transmission (A/T) equipped vehicles use a neutral safety switch to provide ground path for starter relay. Manual transmission (M/T) equipped vehicles use a clutch pedal interlock switch to provide battery voltage from ignition switch to starter relay. See Fig 1.
