Test 8A - Short To 5 Volts

NOTE: For connector terminal identification, see CONNECTOR  IDENTIFICATION. For wiring diagram, see WIRING DIAGRAMS  . Perform TEST VER-1 after each repair.
CAUTION: Always turn ignition switch to OFF position prior to disconnecting or connecting any module connector.
  1. Using DRB, indicate whether vehicle is equipped with specific module. See MODULE APPLICATIONS table under IDENTIFICATION. Turn ignition off. Disconnect Transmission Control Module (TCM) connector, if equipped. TCM is located on left side of engine compartment near cowl. Turn ignition on. If DRB does not display BUS SHORT TO 5 VOLTS, replace TCM.
  2. If DRB displays BUS SHORT TO 5 VOLTS, turn ignition off and disconnect Powertrain Control Module (PCM) connector. PCM is located between data link connector and battery, on fenderwell.
  3. On all bodies, turn ignition on. If DRB does not display BUS SHORT TO 5 VOLTS, go to TEST 8B. If DRB displays BUS SHORT TO 5 VOLTS, turn ignition off and disconnect Controller Anti-Lock Brake (CAB), if equipped. CAB is located on left fenderwell of engine compartment, behind anti-lock brake pump motor.
  4. Turn ignition on. If DRB does not display BUS SHORT TO 5 VOLTS, replace CAB. If DRB displays BUS SHORT TO 5 VOLTS, turn ignition off and disconnect traveler module, if equipped. Traveler module is located in bottom of center section of dash. Turn ignition on. If DRB does not display BUS SHORT TO 5 VOLTS, go to TEST 8D.
  5. If DRB displays BUS SHORT TO 5 VOLTS, turn ignition off and disconnect Mechanical Instrument Cluster (MIC) or Electronic Instrument Cluster (EIC). Turn ignition on. If DRB does not display BUS SHORT TO 5 VOLTS, go to TEST 8E.
  6. If DRB displays BUS SHORT TO 5 VOLTS, turn ignition off and disconnect Vehicle Theft Security System (VTSS) module, if equipped. VTSS module is located in back of glove box. Turn ignition on. If DRB does not display BUS SHORT TO 5 VOLTS, replace VTSS module.
  7. If DRB displays BUS SHORT TO 5 VOLTS, turn ignition off and disconnect Overhead Traveler Information System (OTIS) module, if equipped. OTIS is located at center of roof, above visors.
  8. Turn ignition on. If DRB does not display BUS SHORT TO 5 VOLTS, replace OTIS. If DRB displays BUS SHORT TO 5 VOLTS, turn ignition off and disconnect Auto Temperature Control (ATC) head, if equipped.
  9. Turn ignition on. If DRB does not display BUS SHORT TO 5 VOLTS, go to TEST 8F. If DRB displays BUS SHORT TO 5 VOLTS, turn ignition off and wait 5 minutes.
    CAUTION: Ensure ignition is off for 5 minutes before proceeding.
  10. Disconnect Air Bag System Control Module (ABSCM). ABSCM is located under center of instrument panel. Turn ignition on. If DRB does not display BUS SHORT TO 5 VOLTS, replace ABSCM.
  11. If DRB displays BUS SHORT TO 5 VOLTS, turn ignition off and disconnect Body Control Module (BCM), if equipped. BCM is located behind right kick panel. Turn ignition on. If DRB does not display BUS SHORT TO 5 VOLTS, go to TEST 8G.
  12. If DRB displays BUS SHORT TO 5 VOLTS, disconnect DRB from Data Link Connector (DLC). Using an external voltmeter, check voltage between chassis ground DLC terminal No. 4 (Violet/Brown wire). If voltage is more than 4 volts, repair short to voltage in Violet/Brown wire.
  13. If voltage is less than 4 volts, check voltage between chassis ground and DLC connector terminal No. 3 (White/Black wire). If voltage is more than 4 volts, repair short to voltage in White/Black wire. If voltage is less than 4 volts, replace DRB cable or cartridge as necessary.
