Instrument Cluster Test 17A - Check Engine Light
NOTE:
Perform INSTRUMENT CLUSTER TEST 4A
before proceeding with this test. For connector terminal identification, see CONNECTOR IDENTIFICATION in BODY CONTROL COMPUTER INTRODUCTION. Perform TEST VER-1A
after each repair.
CAUTION:
Always turn ignition switch to OFF position prior to disconnecting or connecting any module connector.
- Start engine. Using scan tool, select vehicle status monitor under body monitor. Read CHECK ENGINE LAMP status. If check engine lamp status is not ON, go to next step. If check engine lamp status is ON, see appropriate article under ENGINE PERFORMANCE.
- Turn ignition from OFF position to ON/RUN position. If check engine light does not come on and then go off, go to next step. If check engine light comes on and then goes off, system is operating properly.
- Turn ignition to UNLOCK position. Using scan tool, actuate ALL LAMPS. If check engine light does not come on, go to next step. If check engine light comes on, replace BCM.
- Turn ignition off. Disconnect instrument cluster. Ensure connectors are clean and not damaged. See Figure in INSTRUMENT CLUSTER TEST 8A. Remove and inspect check engine light bulb. Ensure bulb socket is clean and not damaged. If bulb is defective, replace bulb. If bulb is okay, repair or replace instrument cluster as necessary.
