Instrument Cluster Test 3D - Temperature Gauge Not Operating Properly

NOTE: Perform INSTRUMENT CLUSTER TEST 1A  before proceeding with this test. For connector terminal identification, see CONNECTOR IDENTIFICATION in BODY CONTROL COMPUTER INTRODUCTION. Perform TEST VER-1A  after each repair.
CAUTION: Always turn ignition switch to OFF position prior to disconnecting or connecting any module connector.
  1. Ensure cooling system is operating properly. If cooling system is operating properly, go to next step. If cooling system is not operating properly, repair as needed.
  2. Turn ignition to OFF (UNLOCK) position. Using scan tool, actuate gauges. If temperature gauge goes from cold to hot in 3 steps and then back to cold, go to next step. If temperature gauge does not go from cold to hot, replace temperature gauge.
  3. Using scan tool, read Powertrain Control Module (PCM) status. If scan tool displays ACTIVE ON THE BUS, go to next step. If scan tool does not display ACTIVE ON THE BUS, go to NO RESPONSE TEST 3A  .
  4. Using scan tool, read PCM DTCs. If an engine COOLANT TEMPERATURE SENSOR trouble code is not present, go to next step. If an engine COOLANT TEMPERATURE SENSOR trouble code is present, see appropriate article in ENGINE PERFORMANCE;

    TESTS W/CODES - 2.0L VINS [C,Y] & 2.4L VIN [X]

    TESTS W/CODES - 2.5L V6

  5. Start engine and allow it to idle. Using scan tool, read engine temperature. If scan tool temperature display matches temperature gauge display, temperature gauge is operating properly. If scan tool display and temperature gauge do not match, replace BCM.
