Test 111A - Wipers Operate Constantly With Ignition On
NOTE:
Perform TEST 103A
before proceeding with this test. For connector terminal ID, see CONNECTOR IDENTIFICATION
. For wiring schematics, see WIRING DIAGRAMS
in this article. Perform TEST VER-1 - VERIFICATION PROCEDURE
after each repair.
CAUTION:
Always turn ignition off prior to disconnecting any module connector.
- Turn ignition on and wiper switch off. Using scan tool, read intermittent wiper voltage. If voltage is less than 1 volt, go to step 5). If voltage is more than 1 volt, go to next step.
- Gain access to Body Control Module (BCM). BCM is located behind right kick panel. Turn ignition off. Disconnect BCM bone connector. Go to next step.
- Turn ignition on. Using scan tool in voltmeter mode, measure voltage at terminal No. 16 (Dark Green/Red wire) on BCM Bone connector. If voltage is 10 volts or less, replace BCM. If voltage is more than 10 volts, go to next step.
- Turn ignition off. Disconnect multifunction switch connector. Connector is located on upper part of steering column, behind trim cover. Turn ignition on. Measure voltage at terminal No. 16 (Dark Green/Red wire) on BCM Bone connector. If voltage is more than 10 volts, repair short to voltage in Dark Green/Red wire. If voltage is 10 volts or less, replace multifunction switch.
- Turn ignition off. Remove intermittent wiper relay (relay No. 6) from Power Distribution Center (PDC). PDC is located on left front fender apron. See Figure . If wipers still operate, go to step 9). If wipers stop operating, go to next step.
- Substitute a known-good relay. Turn ignition on. If wipers do not operate constantly, replace original HI/LO wiper relay. If wipers operate constantly, go to next step.
- Turn ignition off. Disconnect Body Control Module (BCM) Bone connector. BCM is located behind right kick panel. Turn ignition on. If wipers do not operate constantly, go to next step. If wipers operate constantly, repair Dark Green/Yellow wire between BCM and ON/OFF wiper relay.
- Disconnect wiper motor connector. Connector is located on engine compartment firewall, just right of power brake booster. Using an external ohmmeter, measure resistance between ground and terminal No. 1 (Tan/Red wire) on wiper motor connector. If resistance is 1000 ohms or greater, go to next step. If resistance is less than 1000 ohms, repair open Tan/Red wire.
- Connect BCM Bone connector. Turn ignition on. Using voltmeter, measure voltage between ground and terminal No. 1 (Tan/Red wire) on wiper motor connector. If voltage is 6 volts or less, replace BCM. If voltage is greater than 6 volts, repair Tan/Red wire for short to voltage.
- Turn ignition off. Remove substitute HI/LO wiper relay. Turn ignition on. Using voltmeter, measure voltage between ground and terminal "B" (Light Green/Black wire) on HI/LO wiper relay socket. If voltage is 1 volt or less, go to next step. If voltage is greater than 1 volt, repair Light Green/Black wire for short to voltage. Replace HI/LO wiper relay and ON/OFF wiper relay.
- Using voltmeter, measure voltage between ground and terminal "E" (Brown/White wire) on HI/LO wiper relay socket. If voltage is 1 volt or less, repair Red/Yellow wire (HI/LO wiper relay HI speed output circuit) for short to voltage. Replace HI/LO wiper relay and ON/OFF wiper relay. If voltage is greater than 1 volt, repair Brown/White wire for short to voltage. Replace HI/LO wiper relay and ON/OFF wiper relay.
