Test 141A - Identifying Vehicle Theft Security System (VTSS) Problems

NOTE: Perform SYMPTOM ID TEST 1A  - IDENTIFYING VEHICLE EQUIPMENT & SYSTEM PROBLEMS before proceeding with this test. For connector terminal ID, see CONNECTOR IDENTIFICATION  . For wiring schematics, see WIRING DIAGRAMS  in this article. Perform TEST VER-3A - VERIFICATION PROCEDURE  after each repair.
CAUTION: Always turn ignition off prior to disconnecting any module connector.
  1. If VTSS indicator light stays on constant, perform TEST 155A  . Connect scan tool to Data Link Connector (DLC), located at right of steering column. Select THEFT ALARM. If scan tool screen is blank or displays a bus failure message, see VEHICLE COMMUNICATIONS TESTS  . If scan tool displays NO RESPONSE, go to TEST 142A  . If scan tool displays MONITOR DISPLAY, go to next step.
  2. Using scan tool, select THEFT ALARM, and then MONITOR DISPLAY. Read Vehicle Theft Security System (VTSS) status. If VTSS status is not DISARMED, go to TEST 141B  . If VTSS status is DISARMED, go to next step.
  3. Using scan tool, select BODY and then BODY CONTROLLER. Read Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTCs). If BATTERY POWER TO MODULE fault message is displayed, see VEHICLE COMMUNICATIONS TESTS  . If scan tool does not display BATTERY POWER TO MODULE DTC, go to next step.
  4. Using scan tool, select THEFT ALARM, MISCELLANEOUS, CHANGE MODE and then DIAGNOSTICS to put VTSS in diagnostics mode. If scan tool does not display PUT IGNITION IN OFF POSITION, go to TEST 143A  . If scan tool displays PUT IGNITION IN OFF POSITION, go to next step.
    NOTE: When theft alarm enters into diagnostics mode, horn should sound 2 times, and VTSS indicator light and headlights should flash. If horn fails to sound, go to TEST 144A  . If VTSS indicator light fails to flash, go to TEST 145A  . If headlights fail to flash, go to TEST 146A  .
  5. Remove key from ignition switch. Open and close each door, depress power door lock switch to LOCK and UNLOCK positions, and rotate key in left and right front doors to UNLOCK position. If horn does not sound after each action, go to appropriate test. See VTSS DIAGNOSTIC TESTING table.

    Power Door Lock Switch Lock Position TEST 151A 
    Power Door Lock Switch Unlock Position TEST 152A 
    Left Front Door Key Cylinder TEST 153A 
    Right Front Door Key Cylinder TEST 154A 
  6. Turn ignition switch to ON position. If horn sounds, go to next step. If horn does not sound, perform TEST 143A  .
  7. Using scan tool, select THEFT ALARM and then MONITOR DISPLAY. Read VTSS status. If VTSS status is disarmed, system is okay. If VTSS status is other than DISARMED, perform TEST 141B  .
  8. If scan tool displays that PCM is 1 NO RESPONSE/2 NO RESPONSE, perform TEST 155A  . If PCM is 1 NOT OK TO ARM VTSS/2 OK TO RUN ENGINE, replace Powertrain Control Module (PCM). If a problem with Remote Keyless Entry (RKE) is suspected, perform TEST 156A  .
