Test 32A - Dimming Interior Displays

NOTE: For connector terminal identification, see CONNECTOR IDENTIFICATION . For wiring diagram, see WIRING DIAGRAMS - 3.0L article in ENGINE PERFORMANCE. Perform TEST VER-1 after each repair.
  1. If instrument cluster display is blank with key on, go to step 4). If cluster display is not blank, move dimmer control lever to center position. Ensure parking lamps are off. Using scan tool, read park lamp switch status. If scan tool displays STEP UP OFF, go to TEST 32B. If scan tool does not display STEP UP OFF, go to next step.
  2. Turn park lamps on. If scan tool does not display STEP UP OFF, go to TEST 32C . If scan tool displays STEP UP OFF, go to next step.
  3. Using scan tool, check panel lamp sensor voltage. Move dimmer control lever from HIGH to LOW position. If scan tool display changes between zero and 5 volts, go to TEST 32D . If scan tool display does not change between zero and 5 volts, go to TEST 32E .
  4. Disconnect instrument cluster Red connector. Using scan tool in ohmmeter mode, check resistance of instrument cluster Red connector terminal No. 7 (Black/Light Green wire). If resistance is more than 5 ohms, repair open Black/Light Green wire. If resistance is less than 5 ohms, replace instrument cluster.
