Relief Pressure Test
- Close gauge shutoff valve completely 3 times. Record highest pressure attained each time.
- If recorded pressures are within specification and range of readings are within 50 psi (3.5 kg/cm2 ), pump is working properly. See POWER STEERING PUMP PRESSURE TEST SPECIFICATIONS table. If recorded pressures are above specification and are not within 50 psi (3.5 kg/cm2 ) of each other, replace pump. If pressures are within 50 psi (3.5 kg/cm2 ) of each other, but below specification, replace pump. See POWER STEERING PUMP R & I under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION.
- Open gauge shutoff valve. Turn steering wheel from stop-to-stop, recording highest pressures at each extreme position. Replace steering gear if pressures at each stop are not the same, as there is an internal leak within steering gear.
- Shut off engine and remove test gauge. Ensure "O" ring at end of high pressure fitting (if equipped) is replaced before connecting fitting to power steering pump. Connect pressure hoses and make any needed repairs.
CAUTION:
DO NOT
leave shutoff valve closed or force pump to operate against stops for more than 5 seconds. Pump damage will result.
