Test 59A - Communication With Transmission Control Module

NOTE: For connector terminal identification and wiring diagrams, see BODY CONTROL COMPUTER  section in this article. Perform TEST VER-1  VERIFICATION TEST after each repair.
CAUTION: Always turn ignition off prior to disconnecting any module connector.
  1. Using scan tool, read body computer DTCs. If scan tool displays TRANS PRNDL MESSAGE TEST FAILED, go to step 4). If scan tool does not display TRANS PRNDL MESSAGE TEST FAILED, go to next step.
  2. Using scan tool, actuate PRNDL lamps. If each lamp illuminates individually then all at once, test is successful. Go to next step. If test fails, repair or replace instrument cluster. See appropriate INSTRUMENT PANEL article.
  3. Using scan tool, select Transmission Control Module (TCM). Select monitors in state displays. Monitor Shift Lever Position (SLP) state of shift lever status. Apply parking brake. Move gear shift lever through all positions. If SLP state matches gear shift lever position, repair or replace instrument cluster. See INSTRUMENT PANEL article. If SLP state does not match gear shift lever position, see appropriate TRANSMISSION DIAGNOSIS article in the AUTO TRANS DIAGNOSIS section.
NOTE: Low battery or momentary Chrysler Collision Detection (CCD) bus failure may cause DTCs to set.
  4. Using scan tool, erase DTCs. Start and run engine for 2 minutes. Turn engine off. Turn ignition on. Using scan tool, read body computer DTCs. If TRANS PRNDL MESSAGE TEST FAILED DTC is not present, system is operating properly at this time. If TRANS PRNDL MESSAGE TEST FAILED DTC is present, go to next step.
  5. Turn ignition off. Disconnect Transmission Control Module (TCM) connector. TCM is located in engine compartment between left front fender and battery. Turn ignition on. Using scan tool in voltmeter mode, connect a jumper wire between TCM connector terminal No. 43 (Violet/Brown wire) and chassis ground. Using scan tool, perform CCD bus test. If scan tool does not display BUS SHORTED TO GROUND, repair open Violet/Brown wire. If scan tool displays BUS SHORTED TO GROUND, go to next step.
  6. Disconnect jumper wire. Connect jumper wire between TCM connector terminal No. 4 (White/Black wire) and chassis ground. If scan tool does not display BUS SHORTED TO GROUND, repair open White/Black wire. If scan tool does not display BUS SHORTED TO GROUND, replace TCM.
