Test 24: L-R Pressure Switch Circuit

NOTE: Small transmission in-line harness connector is 8-way (8-pin) on 1997 models and 10-way (10-pin) on 1998 models.
  1. If DTC 35 is also present, go to TEST 35: LOSS OF PRIME . If DTC 35 is not present, go to next step.
  2. Turn ignition off. Disconnect small transmission in-line harness connector. Measure resistance between ground and L-R pressure switch sense circuit at harness side of small transmission in-line harness connector. If resistance is greater than 400 ohms, go to step 4). If resistance is not as specified, go to next step.
  3. Disconnect TCM harness connector. Measure resistance between ground and L-R pressure switch sense circuit at harness side of small transmission in-line harness connector. If resistance is less than 5 ohms, repair L-R pressure sense circuit for a short to ground between TCM and small transmission in-line harness connector. If resistance is not as specified, replace TCM.
  4. Disconnect TCM harness connector. Measure resistance between L-R pressure switch sense circuit and each remaining circuit at transmission side of small transmission in-line harness connector. If all resistance's are greater than 5 ohms, go to next step. If resistance is not as specified, repair L-R pressure switch sense circuit for a short to circuit which measured less than 5 ohms.
  5. Measure resistance of L-R pressure switch sense circuit between TCM harness connector and harness side of small transmission in-line harness connector. If resistance is less than 5 ohms, go to next step. If resistance is not as specified, repair open in L-R pressure switch sense circuit between TCM harness connector and small transmission in-line harness connector.
  6. Measure resistance between ground and L-R pressure switch sense circuit at transmission side of small transmission in-line harness connector. If resistance is less than 5 ohms, go to next step. If resistance is not as specified, go to step 8).
  7. Disconnect solenoid pack harness connector. Measure resistance between ground and L-R pressure switch sense circuit at transmission side of small transmission in-line harness connector. If resistance is less than 5 ohms, repair L-R pressure switch sense circuit for a short to ground between solenoid pack and small transmission in-line harness connector. If resistance is not as specified, replace solenoid pack.
  8. Measure resistance between L-R pressure switch sense circuit and each remaining circuit at transmission side of small transmission in-line harness connector. If all resistance's are greater than 5 ohms, go to next step. If resistance is not as specified, go to step 10).
  9. Disconnect solenoid pack harness connector. Measure resistance between L-R pressure switch sense circuit and circuit which measured less than 5 ohms at transmission side of small transmission in-line harness connector. If resistance is less than 5 ohms, repair L-R pressure switch sense circuit for a short to circuit which measured less than 5 ohms. If resistance is not as specified, replace solenoid pack.
  10. Disconnect solenoid pack harness connector. Measure resistance of L-R pressure switch sense circuit between solenoid pack harness connector and transmission side of small transmission in-line harness connector. If resistance is less than 5 ohms, go to next step. If resistance is not as specified, repair open in L-R pressure switch sense circuit between solenoid pack and small transmission in-line harness connector.
  11. Reconnect TCM harness connector. Turn ignition on. Using scan tool, monitor L-R pressure switch status. Record reading. Using a fused jumper wire, connect battery voltage to L-R pressure switch sense circuit at transmission side of small transmission in-line harness connector. If L-R pressure switch status toggles between CLOSED and OPEN, go to next step. If L-R pressure switch status does not toggle as specified, replace TCM.
  12. Reconnect all harness connectors. Connect a 300 psi (21 kg/cm2 ) pressure gauge to L-R clutch pressure tap. See TESTING in AUTO TRANS OVERHAUL - 42LE article. Turn ignition on. Raise and support vehicle. Depress brake pedal and start engine. DO NOT allow wheels to turn. Place gearshift lever in "L" position. Increase engine speed to 1400 RPM. Using scan tool, actuate L-R solenoid. Observe pressure gauge reading. If pressure fluctuates from less than 5 psi (.35 kg/cm2 ) to 115-145 psi (8.0-10.1 kg/cm2 ), replace solenoid pack. If pressure is not as specified, go to next step.
  13. If pressure rises to greater than 5 psi (.35 kg/cm2 ), go to next step. If pressure does not rise to greater than 5 psi (.35 kg/cm2 ), replace solenoid pack.
  14. If pressure ever falls to less than 5 psi (.35 kg/cm2 ), go to step 16). If pressure does not fall to less than 5 psi (.35 kg/cm2 ), go to next step.
  15. Ensure all valve body bolts are torqued to specification. See AUTO TRANS OVERHAUL - 42LE article. Tighten if necessary and go to step 17). If all bolts are torqued to specification, replace solenoid pack and go to step 17).
  16. If pressure ever reaches 115 psi (8.0 kg/cm2 ), conditions necessary to set DTC 21 are not present at this time. If pressure does not reach 115 psi (8.0 kg/cm2 ), replace solenoid pack and go to next step.
  17. Using scan tool, actuate L-R solenoid. Increase engine speed to 1400 RPM. If pressure fluctuates from zero to 115-145 psi (8.0-10.1 kg/cm2 ), remove pressure gauge and road test vehicle to verify condition is corrected. If pressure is not as specified, overhaul transmission as necessary. See AUTO TRANS OVERHAUL - 42LE article.
