Test 83A - OTIS Ambient Temperature Sensor

NOTE: Perform SYMPTOM ID TEST 1A  - IDENTIFYING VEHICLE EQUIPMENT & SYSTEM PROBLEMS or TEST 81A before proceeding with this test. For connector terminal ID, see CONNECTOR IDENTIFICATION  and WIRING DIAGRAMS  . Drive vehicle to update OTIS and perform TEST VER-1 - VERIFICATION PROCEDURE  after each repair.
CAUTION: Always turn ignition off prior to disconnecting any module connector.
  1. Using scan tool, read outside temperature. If scan tool does not display 185°F, go to step 4). If scan tool displays 185°F, go to next step.
  2. Disconnect ambient (outside) temperature sensor connector. Sensor is located behind front bumper, left of center. Turn ignition off, then back on. If scan tool temperature display drops to -70°F, replace ambient temperature sensor. If scan tool temperature display does not drop to-70°F, go to next step.
  3. Turn ignition off. Disconnect Body Control Module (BCM) Gray connector. BCM is located behind right kick panel. Using scan tool in ohmmeter mode, measure resistance at terminal No. 10 (Violet/Light Green wire) on BCM Gray connector. If resistance is less than 100 ohms, repair short to ground in Violet/Light Green wire. If resistance is 100 ohms or greater, replace BCM.
  4. Disconnect ambient (outside) temperature sensor connector. Sensor is located behind front bumper, left of center. If scan tool does not display -70°F, go to TEST 84A  . If scan tool displays -70°F, go to next step.
  5. Connect a jumper wire between ambient temperature sensor connector terminals. Turn ignition off, then back on. Using scan tool, read outside temperature. If scan tool displays 183°F, replace ambient temperature sensor. If scan tool does not display 183°F, go to next step.
  6. Connect jumper wire between ground and terminal No. 2 (Violet/Light Green wire) on ambient temperature sensor connector. Turn ignition off, then back on. If scan tool displays 183°F, go to step 8). If scan tool does not display 183°F, go to next step.
  7. Leave jumper wire connected. Turn ignition off. Disconnect Body Control Module (BCM) Gray connector. BCM is located behind right kick panel. Using scan tool in ohmmeter mode, measure resistance at terminal No. 10 (Violet/Light Green wire) on BCM Gray connector. If resistance is 5 ohms or greater, repair open Violet/Light Green wire. If resistance is less than 5 ohms, replace BCM.
  8. Turn ignition off. Disconnect Body Control Module (BCM) Bone connector. BCM is located behind right kick panel. Connect a jumper wire between ground and terminal No. 1 (Gray/Tan wire) on ambient temperature sensor connector. Go to next step.
  9. Using scan tool in ohmmeter mode, measure resistance at terminal No. 15 (Gray/Tan wire) on BCM Bone connector. If resistance is 5 ohms or greater, repair open Gray/Tan wire. If resistance is less than 5 ohms, replace BCM.
