Test NTC-13: Checking P/N Switch
NOTE:
Possible causes are: P/N switch sense circuit open, P/N switch sense circuit short to ground, PCM defective or Transmission Range Sensor (TRS) defective.
- Turn ignition on with engine off. Using scan tool, read Park/Neutral (P/N) switch state. While observing scan tool display, move gear selector through all gear positions. If scan tool displays P/N and D/R, test is complete. If scan tool does not display P/N and D/R, go to next step.
- Turn ignition off. Disconnect Powertrain Control Module (PCM) connector C2 (located nearest to rear of vehicle). PCM is located to left of Power Distribution Center (PDC) in engine compartment. Inspect electrical connector and clean/repair as necessary. Using a DVOM, check resistance of P/N switch sense circuit between PCM connector C2 terminal No. 76 (Black/White wire) and chassis ground. Observe DVOM while moving gear selector through all gear positions. If resistance stayed less than 5 ohms all the time, go to next step. If resistance did not stay less than 5 ohms all the time, go to step 5 .
- Disconnect Transmission Range Sensor (TRS) connector. See Fig 1 . Inspect electrical connector and clean/repair as necessary. Using a DVOM, check resistance of P/N switch sense circuit between PCM connector C2 terminal No. 76 (Black/White wire) and chassis ground. Observe DVOM while moving gear selector through all gear positions. If resistance did not stay less than 5 ohms all the time, go to next step. If resistance stayed less than 5 ohms all the time, repair P/N switch sense circuit short to ground. Perform TEST VER-2A: ROAD TEST FOR NON-OBD II .
- If no other potential causes are remaining, TRS is assumed to be defective. Replace TRS. Perform TEST VER-2A: ROAD TEST FOR NON-OBD II .
- Using a DVOM, check resistance of P/N switch sense circuit between PCM connector C2 terminal No. 76 (Black/White wire) and chassis ground. Observe DVOM while moving gear selector through all gear positions. If resistance did not switch from less than 5 ohms to more than 5 ohms, go to next step. If resistance switched from less than 5 ohms to more than 5 ohms, replace PCM. Perform TEST VER-2A: ROAD TEST FOR NON-OBD II .
- Using a DVOM, check resistance of P/N switch sense circuit between PCM connector C2 terminal No. 76 (Black/White wire) and TRS connector (Black/Light Blue wire). If resistance is less than 5 ohms, go to next step. If resistance is 5 ohms or more, repair open P/N switch sense circuit. Perform TEST VER-2A: ROAD TEST FOR NON-OBD II .
- If no other potential causes are remaining, TRS is assumed to be defective. Replace TRS. Perform TEST VER-2A: ROAD TEST FOR NON-OBD II .
