Test NTC-3: Checking EGR System
NOTE:
Possible causes are: vacuum line to EGR solenoid restricted or leaking, vacuum nipple plugged at throttle body, EGR valve assembly engine speed stayed the same, EGR valve assembly tone changed, EGR valve assembly vacuum less than 3 in. Hg or EGR valve assembly does not hold vacuum for 30 seconds.
- Turn ignition off. Disconnect vacuum supply hose at EGR solenoid. Connect a vacuum gauge to disconnected vacuum hose. Start engine. Observe vacuum gauge. If vacuum is more than 10 in. Hg at idle, go to next step. If vacuum is 10 in. Hg or less, go to step 6 .
- Turn ignition off. Disconnect exhaust backpressure hose at backpressure transducer. Cap open nipple on transducer. Connect a hand vacuum pump to EGR valve nipple. Start engine. Using hand vacuum pump, apply vacuum to EGR valve. Listen for engine speed change. If engine speed changed, go to next step. If engine speed did not change, replace EGR valve assembly.
- Adjust shop air to 20 psi. Connect shop air to nipple on base of transducer. While opening and closing throttle, listen for a tone change. If tone did not change, go to next step. If tone changed, replace EGR valve assembly.
- Start engine and idle. Disconnect vacuum supply hose at EGR solenoid. Connect a vacuum gauge to disconnected vacuum hose. While observing vacuum gauge, disconnect EGR solenoid connector. Raise engine speed slightly above idle and observe vacuum gauge. If vacuum reading is more than 3 in. Hg, go to next step. If vacuum reading is not more than 3 in. Hg, replace EGR valve assembly.
- Turn ignition off. Disconnect exhaust backpressure hose. Cap open nipple at backpressure transducer. Connect a hand vacuum pump to EGR valve nipple. Apply 10 in. Hg and hold for 30 seconds. If vacuum held for 30 seconds, test is complete. If vacuum did not hold for 30 seconds, replace EGR valve assembly.
- With engine running, disconnect EGR vacuum supply hose at intake manifold. Connect a vacuum gauge to intake manifold nipple. Observe vacuum gauge. If vacuum is 10 in. Hg or less, go to next step. If vacuum is more than 10 in. Hg, repair restriction or leak in vacuum line to EGR solenoid. Perform TEST VER-2A: ROAD TEST FOR NON-OBD II .
- Turn ignition off. If no other potential causes are remaining, vacuum nipple at throttle body is assumed to be plugged. Repair plugged vacuum nipple at throttle body. Perform TEST VER-2A: ROAD TEST FOR NON-OBD II .
