Instrument Cluster Illumination Shorted To Battery

NOTE: Perform INSTRUMENT CLUSTER TEST 9A  before proceeding with this test. For connector terminal identification and wiring diagrams, see BODY CONTROL COMPUTER - INTRODUCTION. Perform VERIFICATION TEST: VER-2A  after each repair.
CAUTION: Always turn ignition switch to OFF position prior to disconnecting or connecting any module connector.
NOTE: The following test covers all optional equipment. Skip any steps that do not apply.
  1. Disconnect traction control switch connector. Monitor instrument panel lights while adjusting dimmer switch from low to high position. If lights function correctly, repair or replace traction control switch for short to battery voltage. If lights do not function correctly, go to next step.
  2. Disconnect radio connectors. Monitor instrument panel lights while adjusting dimmer switch from low to high position. If lights function correctly, repair or replace radio for short to battery voltage. If lights do not function correctly, go to next step.
  3. Disconnect ash tray illumination connector. Monitor instrument panel lights while adjusting dimmer switch from low to high position. If lights function correctly, repair or replace ash tray illumination for short to battery voltage. If lights do not function correctly, go to next step.
  4. Disconnect Automatic Temperature Control (ATC) connector. Monitor instrument panel lights while adjusting dimmer switch from low to high position. If lights function correctly, repair or replace ATC for short to battery voltage. If lights do not function correctly, go to next step.
  5. Disconnect PRND3L illumination connector. Monitor instrument panel lights while adjusting dimmer switch from low to high position. If lights function correctly, repair or replace PRND3L unit for short to battery voltage. If lights do not function correctly, go to next step.
  6. Disconnect Overhead Traveler Information System (OTIS) connector. Monitor instrument panel lights while adjusting dimmer switch from low to high position. If lights function correctly, repair or replace OTIS unit for short to battery voltage. If lights do not function correctly, go to next step.
  7. Disconnect headlight switch connector. Disconnect instrument cluster Green connector C1. Using external voltmeter, measure voltage between ground and terminal No. 4 (Orange wire) on Green connector. If voltage is 10 volts or less, repair or replace instrument cluster as needed. If voltage is greater than 10 volts, repair headlight switch for short to battery voltage.
