Identifying Vehicle Theft Security System Problems

NOTE: Perform SYMPTOM ID TEST 1A  before proceeding with this test. For connector terminal identification and wiring diagrams, see BODY CONTROL COMPUTER - INTRODUCTION article. Perform VERIFICATION TEST: VER-2A  after each repair.
CAUTION: Always turn ignition switch to OFF position prior to disconnecting or connecting any module connector.
  1. If VTSS is operating without being tripped, select THEFT ALARM using scan tool. Select MONITOR DISPLAY and read ALARM TRIPPED BY status.
  2. If VTSS indicator light is illuminated constantly 30 seconds after key is turned on or while driving, go to VTSS TEST 3A .
  3. Using scan tool, select BODY SYSTEM, then BODY COMPUTER. Verify communication with Body Control Module (BCM). If scan tool displays NO RESPONSE, go to TEST 1A in appropriate VEHICLE COMMUNICATIONS article.
  4. Using scan tool, select MONITOR DISPLAY. Read VTSS status. If VTSS mode is not DISARMED, go to VTSS TEST 2A . If VTSS mode is DISARMED, go to next step.
  5. Using scan tool, select SENSORS. Read IGNITION VOLTAGE. If battery voltage is displayed with ignition on, go to next step. If battery voltage is not displayed with ignition on, go to TEST 16A in appropriate VEHICLE COMMUNICATIONS article.
  6. Using scan tool, check KEY IN IGNITION SWITCH status. If scan tool displays CLOSED with key inserted, go to next step. If scan tool does not displayed CLOSED with key inserted, go to POWER DOOR LOCK TEST 9A .
  7. Using scan tool, select MISCELLANEOUS, then CHANGE MODE. Select DIAGNOSTICS. VTSS is now in diagnostic mode. Follow scan tool directions. When entering diagnostic mode with key in ignition switch, horn should sound twice and headlights and VTSS indicator light should flash. If horn does not sound, go to VTSS TEST 4A . If VTSS indicator light does not illuminate, go to VTSS TEST 5A . If headlights do not illuminate, go to EXTERIOR LIGHTING TEST 1A .
  8. Remove key from ignition switch. Open and close each door. Horn should sound after each action. If horn does not sound, go to DOOR AJAR TEST 1A . Rotate key in each front door key cylinder. Horn should sound. If horn does not sound, go to POWER DOOR LOCK TEST 1A .
  9. Using scan tool, select MONITOR DISPLAY. Read VTSS status. If VTSS mode is other than DISARMED, go to VTSS TEST 2A . If engine controller is 1 NO RESPONSE/2 NO RESPONSE, go to TEST 9A in appropriate VEHICLE COMMUNICATIONS article. If engine controller is 1 NOT OK TO ARM VTSS/OK TO RUN ENGINE, replace Powertrain Control Module (PCM). See Figure.
  10. If problem is with Remote Keyless Entry (RKE) arm/disarm function, go to POWER DOOR LOCK TEST 11A .
