Brake Indicator Not Operating Properly

NOTE: Ensure parking brake is released when performing test procedures unless instructed otherwise.
  1. Check parking brake operation. If parking brake operates properly, go to next step. If parking brake does not operate properly, repair parking brake as necessary. See appropriate DISC & DRUM article in BRAKES.
  2. If brake warning light does not illuminate when brake fluid reservoir is empty, go to next step. If brake warning light illuminates when brake fluid reservoir is empty, go to step  6 .
  3. Turn ignition off. Disconnect brake fluid level switch harness connector. Turn ignition on. Wait 10 seconds. Using a fused jumper wire, connect terminals "A" (Black wire) and "B" (Gray/Black wire) at brake fluid level switch harness connector. If brake indicator does not illuminate, go to next step. If brake indicator illuminates, replace brake fluid level switch.
  4. Remove jumper wire from terminal "A" and connect to ground. If brake indicator does not illuminate, go to next step. If brake indicator illuminates, repair open in Black wire between brake fluid level switch and ground.
  5. Turn ignition off. Disconnect instrument cluster harness connector C2. Measure resistance in Gray/Black wire between terminal "B" at brake fluid level switch harness connector and terminal No. 3 at instrument cluster harness connector C2. See Figure . If resistance is 5 ohms or less, replace instrument cluster. If resistance is greater than 5 ohms, repair open in circuit between brake fluid level switch and instrument cluster. This circuit runs through junction block.
  6. Turn ignition on. If brake indicator is on at all times, go to next step. If brake indicator does not illuminate, go to step  11 .
  7. Check brake fluid level. If brake fluid is level is okay, go to next step. If brake fluid level is low, full brake fluid reservoir as necessary.
  8. Disconnect brake fluid level switch harness connector. If brake indicator is on at all times, go to next step. If brake indicator goes out, replace brake fluid level switch.
  9. Disconnect parking brake switch harness connector. If brake indicator is on at all times, go to next step. If brake indicator goes out, replace parking brake switch.
  10. Turn ignition off. Disconnect instrument cluster harness connector C2. Measure resistance between ground and terminal No. 3 (Gray/Black wire) at instrument cluster harness connector C2. See Figure . If resistance is greater than 10 ohms, replace instrument cluster. If resistance is 10 ohms or less, repair short to ground in circuit between brake fluid level switch, parking brake switch and instrument cluster. This circuit runs through junction block.
  11. Turn ignition on. Wait 10 seconds. Engage parking brake. If brake indicator illuminates, go to next step. If brake indicator does not illuminate, go to step  13 .
  12. Release parking brake. Crank engine using ignition switch. If brake indicator illuminates when engine is cranking, problem is intermittent. If brake indicator does not illuminate while engine is cranking, replace instrument cluster.
  13. Turn ignition off. Disconnect parking brake switch harness connector. Turn ignition on. Wait 10 seconds. Using a fused jumper wire, ground Gray/Black wire at parking brake switch harness connector. If brake indicator does not illuminate, go to next step. If brake indicator illuminates, replace parking brake switch.
  14. Turn ignition off. Disconnect instrument cluster harness connector C2. Measure resistance in Gray/Black wire between parking brake switch harness connector and terminal No. 3 at instrument cluster harness connector C2. See Figure . If resistance is 5 ohms or less, replace instrument cluster. If resistance is greater than 5 ohms, repair open in circuit between parking brake switch and instrument cluster. This circuit runs through junction block.
