PRND3L Indicator Malfunction

WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 2002 Dodge Intrepid, 2002 Chrysler Intrepid, 2002 Chrysler Concorde, and 2002 Chrysler 300M. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
NOTE: After making any repairs, perform BODY VERIFICATION TEST  under VERIFICATION TESTS.

Possible Causes:

Testing

  1. Turn ignition off. Connect scan tool to Data Link Connector (DLC). Turn ignition on. Using scan tool, attempt to communicate with Mechanical Instrument Cluster (MIC). If scan communicates with MIC, go to next step. If scan tool does not communicate with MIC perform MIC MESSAGES NOT RECEIVED  test under COMMUNICATION SYSTEMS.
  2. Turn ignition off. Turn ignition on while observing PRND3L display. If all PRND3L indicators illuminate, go to next step. If any PRND3L indicators do not illuminate, replace instrument cluster. See ANALOG INSTRUMENT PANELS - CONCORDE, INTREPID & 300M article.
  3. Using scan tool, select TRANSMISSION, MONITOR DISPLAY, SHIFT LEVER, then SLP. Monitor SHIFT LEVER status. Engage parking brake. Shift gear selector thought all gear positions. If scan tool display agrees with gear selected, replace instrument cluster. See ANALOG INSTRUMENT PANELS - CONCORDE, INTREPID & 300M article. If scan tool display does not agree with gear selected, diagnose and repair transmission range sensor input to TCM. See DIAGNOSIS - 42LE article in AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSIONS.
