Checking Brake Switch Performance

WARNING: This page does not describe the selected car, but rather 8 other vehicles, including the 2003 Dodge Intrepid, 2003 Chrysler Intrepid, 2003 Chrysler Concorde, 2003 Chrysler 300M, and 2002 Dodge Intrepid. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
  1. Turn ignition off. Connect scan tool to DLC and monitor BRAKE SWITCH INPUT state. Turn ignition on. Depress and release brake pedal several times. If scan tool display matches brake pedal status, system is operating properly at this time. If scan tool display does not match brake pedal status, go to next step.
  2. NOTE: To adjust brake switch, brake switch must be removed, then reinstalled.
  3. Turn ignition off. Check brake switch adjustment. See BRAKE SWITCH  under ADJUSTMENTS. Using scan tool, monitor BRAKE SWITCH INPUT state. Turn ignition on. Depress and release brake pedal several times. If scan tool display matches brake pedal status, system is operating properly at this time. If scan tool display does not match brake pedal status, go to next step.
  4. Using scan tool, read DTCs. If DTC P0703: BRAKE SWITCH #2 CIRCUIT sets, see DTC P0703: BRAKE SWITCH #2 CIRCUIT test in DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODES & MESSAGES (2002)  table or DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODES & MESSAGES (2003)  table. If any other DTCs are set, go to DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODES & MESSAGES (2002)  table or DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODES & MESSAGES (2003)  table. If no DTCs are set, go to next step.
  5. Turn ignition off. Disconnect brake switch connector. Remove brake switch. See BRAKE SWITCH  under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. Using DVOM, measure for continuity at specified brake switch terminals (component side) with plunger in specified position. See Fig 1. See BRAKE SWITCH CONTINUITY  table. If continuity is not as specified, replace brake switch. See BRAKE SWITCH  under ADJUSTMENTS.

    Depressed 1 & 2 Yes

    ..... 5 & 6 No
    (1) When brake pedal is released, switch is depressed. When brake pedal is depressed, switch is released.
