Column Shift Models

WARNING: This page does not describe the selected car, but rather 23 other vehicles, including the 2002 Dodge Stratus, 2002 Dodge Neon, 2002 Dodge Intrepid, 2002 Chrysler Sebring, and 2002 Chrysler Prowler. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.

The shift interlock system consists of an electro-magnetic solenoid mounted on upper steering column. Brake Transmission Shift Interlock (BTSI) solenoid is energized by brake switch, completing ground circuit when brake pedal is depressed. With ignition switch in LOCK or ACC positions, the gearshift lever is locked in Park. With ignition switch in OFF positions, the gearshift lever is unlocked and allows gearshift lever to move to any position. This enables vehicle to moved in the event the battery is dead or removed. With ignition switch in ON/RUN position, gearshift lever is released from Park when brake pedal is depressed. The ignition interlock system also prevents the ignition switch from being returned to LOCK or ACC positions unless gearshift lever is returned to Park.
