Temperature Gauge Not Operating Properly
- Turn ignition off. Connect scan tool to Data Link Connector (DLC). Turn ignition on. Using scan tool, attempt to communicate with Powertrain Control Module (PCM). If communication was established, go to next step. If communication was not established, repair communication concern. See NO RESPONSE FROM POWERTRAIN CONTROL MODULE (PCI BUS) under COMMUNICATIONS.
- Turn ignition off. Press and hold trip button on instrument cluster while turning ignition on. If temperature gauge sweeps from "C" to "H" then back to "C", go to next step. If temperature gauge does not sweep from "C" to "H" then back to "C", replace instrument cluster.
- Using scan tool, retrieve PCM DTCs. If no DTCs exist, go to next step. If any DTCs exist, repair powertrain concern as necessary. See appropriate SELF-DIAGNOSTICS article in ENGINE PERFORMANCE.
- Start vehicle. Using scan tool, monitor engine temperature signal to PCM. If approximately the correct engine temperature is displayed, go to next step. If approximately the correct engine temperature is not displayed, replace PCM.
- Using scan tool, monitor engine temperature signal to instrument cluster. If approximately the correct engine temperature is displayed, replace instrument cluster. If approximately the correct engine temperature is not displayed, replace PCM.
